It’s estimated that around a quarter of employees dream of owning their own business. Unfortunately, many of those who go on to make the break find that working for yourself can be quite a lonely experience. A new research study has found that a massive 40% of the self-employed say they’ve felt lonely since setting up their own business.
When people start out, they generally tend to work from home, and if you’re used to working in an office surrounded by other people, you’ll probably be missing the social interaction and cross-fertilisation of ideas that come with it.
Unfortunately, many people who work alone tend to get demoralised and unproductive, which leads to a loss of productivity.
Whilst you are ultimately responsible for the success of your business, you don’t have to be lonely at work. Look for networking groups in your area… and if there aren’t any, start one! You’ll meet other business people to talk to, do business with, and discuss issues with – if you’ve got a problem you’re not sure how to solve, ask around and see if anyone else has had to deal with something similar.
One of the most successful trends of the 21st century is co-working office spaces. These are shared working environments, where sole traders and people working for small companies share an office space, getting the best of all worlds: a cost-effective working space that separates your home and work life; rental includes desk space, WiFi, overheads and even tea and coffee; other people in the same situation as you providing company in the office as well as people to network with and ask advice from. Many people who are based in collaborative working spaces find they are more motivated and productive with other people around them.
Other advantages of working in a collaborative work space is that you’ll probably find another company you can do business with, whether you’re looking for someone to help you out with a project, are looking for a bit of extra work yourself, or even looking for a partner for a new business venture.
When you’re part of a group, you can achieve so much!
